Hiking Spain
Our
hiking tours of Spain and Portugal explore four of Iberia's most exotic
landscapes-the Spanish Alpujarras, the sunny Algarve, the Azores Islands,
and the Portuguese Camino de Santiago. While hiking in Spain we leave
the tourist crowds behind as we seek out the hidden landscapes, secluded
beaches, and fascinating history that are the Spain's best-kept secrets.
We take you off the beaten path to give you an authentic experience
of the Spanish countryside.
What to expect while hiking
through Spain
Our hiking tours through Spain are designed for people who enjoy active
vacations. We hesitate to assign ratings to our trips because we've
watched "beginners" charge up hills, and triathletes enjoy slowing
down to smell the roses! Our support van makes it possible for an
energetic beginner to enjoy virtually any of our hiking tours of Spain.
While the terrain is sometimes hilly, none of the routes are extreme,
with daily options ranging from five to twelve miles.
In the evening, we'll kick off our hiking boots and relax over a feast
of local specialties: Andalusian paella, a platter of tapas, or an
Azorean cozido stew cooked in the heat of a volcanic steam vent. Our
accommodations, whether in a mountain lodge perched high in the Alpujarras
or an oceanfront resort overlooking the crashing Atlantic, are sure
to inspire dreams of the adventures that await on the trail.

The
south of Spain is a hiker's paradise, and our route celebrates its
amazing diversity. We'll warm up with a day of hiking along the cliffs
and dunes of the sunny of Spain's Mediterranean coast. We'll then
head inland to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, the region's mountain
range, to begin our Alpujarran adventure. Our hiking routes traverse
valleys that are among the most fertile in all of Spain, thanks to
the irrigation systems introduced by the Moors hundreds of years ago.
Even today the region is filled with groves of cherries, pears, almonds,
figs, quince, and pomegranates. The fresh mountain air is permeated
with the rich smells of wild rosemary, thyme, and lavender. Stunning
views of the snow-capped Sierra Nevada and terraced white villages
seeming to spill down the mountainsides lie around every bend in the
trail.

This hiking tour explores this historic countryside of Spain and Portugal.
Each footstep is steeped in history. In Portugal, we'll follow the
traditional "Camino Portugues," the centuries-old path that guided
pilgrims approaching Santiago from the south. Along the way we'll
hike in Peneda-Gerês National Park, home to wild ponies, mystical
Celtic stones, and craggy mountain villages. After crossing the Rio
Minho and hiking into Spain, along the "Camino Xacobea", which leads
through verdant farmland and fishing villages overlooking a fjord-like
coastline. In Santiago, we'll join pilgrims and adventurers from around
the world in visiting the famous Gothic cathedral dedicated to St.
James, the patron saint of Spain. Our adventure ends in seaside Baiona,
with a day for exploring the beaches and islands of Islas Cíes Nature
Reserve.
