Join
us for a relaxing week of biking, back roads, and beaches on picturesque
Prince Edward Island! Irish-green fields, stunning red cliffs, and sparkling
blue waves characterize the maritime landscape in Canada's smallest province.
Much of our cycling route hugs the ocean along the Blue Heron Drive, named
for the statuesque birds that frequent the area. Our route follows quiet
back roads over gently rolling terrain, and includes portions of the new
Confederation Bicycle Trail.
Our itinerary is planned with plenty of time to swim in some of the warmest
ocean waters north of the Carolinas and explore the endless dunes and beaches
of PEI National Park. You'll enjoy meeting PEI's friendly locals at a community
lobster supper, and celebrate island culture with a traditional music ceilidh
and an evening of theater featuring Maritime playwrights and themes. You'll
have a chance to observe some local wildlife as well, as we sight cormorants,
terns, osprey, herons, egrets, and the endangered piping plover on a beach
walk guided by an island naturalist.
Friendly country inns will welcome us all along our route. Gourmands will
delight in PEI's famed mussels, and those who wish can indulge in lobster
for dinner every night. We'll enjoy perfect cycling temperatures and refreshing
ocean breezes throughout the summer months, but the locals might persuade
you to visit in late June, when PEI's wild lupines bloom so profusely that
the countryside resembles a Monet landscape!
MARITIME SPECIAL: Extend your stay in the Maritimes by combining our PEI and Nova Scotia bike tours back-to-back. Combine the two tours, and take $200 per person off the second trip.

PEI Itinerary
Day 1: Afternoon van transfer from
Charlottetown Airport to the cozy seaside village and arts enclave of Victoria-by-the-Sea,
originally an 18th-century English landlord's estate. Our warm-up spin
along the shore ends with an "educational" stop at the Island Chocolates
Company! Welcome dinner and two-night stay at a charming Victorian-era
inn.
Day
2: Cycle past scenic coves, lighthouses, and Provincial Parks
along Northumberland Strait. At Fort Amherst National Historic Park, our
picnic site boasts a panoramic view of Charlottetown Harbor. This evening
we'll take in the show at the Victoria Playhouse, whose director is Easy
Rider guide Erskine Smith! (22, 45, or 53 mi.)
Day 3: Follow the Blue Heron Drive
along the south coast (with a great view of the Confederation Bridge)
en route to our harborfront hotel in Summerside . In
the afternoon, cycle through the Région Acadienne to historic Green
Park, devoted to the island's "Age of Sail," or learn about PEI's French
heritage at Le Musée Acadien in nearby Miscouche. After dinner,
those who wish can take in a local ceilidh. (25, 32, 45, or 52 mi.)
Day
4: Ride through the rolling green farmland of the interior
to the Gulf of St. Lawrence. If the view at the Southwest River doesn't
stop you, the fresh blueberry pie probably will! In Cavendish ,
a warm welcome awaits us at Kindred Spirits Country Inn. Anne of Green
Gables fans can visit Lucy Maud Montgomery's homestead before we
join in a PEI tradition, a community lobster supper! ( 33 or 39 mi)
Day 5: Our coastal route begins on
a scenic nature trail in the National Park. Continue along the cliffs of
Cavendish to a picnic featuring fresh mussels and a local storyteller!
In Stanhope , our century-old resort overlooks Covehead
Bay and twenty-five miles of dunes and beaches in the National Park. The
Dunes Studio Gallery provides an artistic backdrop for tonight's dinner.
( 26, 32, or 42 mi.)
Day 6: Learn about shore ecology and
sight cormorants and osprey on a morning nature walk with an island naturalist.
Afterward, bike along the National Seashore, with a stop at the picturesque
harbor at Tracadie Wharf. The Confederation Cycling Trail brings us to
the 19th-century heart of Charlottetown . We'll enjoy
a private walking tour of the Historic District before our farewell celebration
and four-star overnight at The Inns on Great George. (25 or 31 mi.)
Day 7: Morning van transfer to Charlottetown
