Each
of our biking tours highlights a unique facet of this enchanted jewel.
Portugal is a cyclist's delight, from its sparkling blue coast to the colorful
wine country of the Minho and the sunwashed, Provence-like Alentejo region.
The exotic volcanic islands of the Azores, located in the Atlantic 700
miles west of Lisbon, are perfect for those seeking the ultimate off-the-beaten-path
vacation. In southern Spain, we explore a region steeped in Moorish legacy
with our Andalusian cycling tour. Further north, cyclists can make a two-wheeled
pilgrimage along the thousand-year-old Camino de Santiago.
The charm of present-day Iberia is firmly rooted in its past. Cobbled streets
wind through the old town centers, and azulejos (hand-painted tiles) decorate
everything from palaces to the tiniest roadside shrine. The southern European
temperament is friendly and patient, and a simple greeting of "bom dia" or "buenas" always
results in a warm smile.
Our
often-historic accommodations, restored as gracious inns, will surround
you with reminders of Iberia's glorious past. Our lodgings include
Portuguese manor houses and castles, Spanish palaces and paradors, and
a monastery which sent some of the first monks to the New World.
Robust olive oil, garlic, coriander, and saffron flavor the cuisine,
complemented by local wines-deep reds from Spain's Rioja, and Portugal's
sparkling vinho verde and velvety Port. You'll enjoy colorful presentations
of seafood, veal, grilled fish, and of course Spain's famed paella,
gazpacho, and endless variety of tapas. Each of our Iberian bike
tours is guided by two bilingual leaders, including a Spanish, Portuguese,
or Azorean leader who will guide you through your menus as well as
along the road! |
