Day 1: Morning transfer from Lisbon Airport to Grândola, a traditional Alentejo village famously linked to the wakeup call signaling the start of Portugal’s 1974 “Carnation Revolution.” A peaceful warm-up ride winds through the cork groves to a scenic overlook and shrine. Welcome dinner in the historic town market. (5 or 14 mi.)
Day 2: Cycle through the Serra da Grândola foothills to Santiago do Caçem, whose Moorish past can be sensed in its winding backstreets and castle walls. Tour the ancient Roman ruins of Miróbriga, then descend to the coast for the crescent beaches of Porto Covo. End near Santiago do Caçem at the Tres Marias, a comfortable country house surrounded by nature and animals. (35 or 41 mi.)
Day 3: Rice fields and traditional villages highlight our bike ride to the magnificent Praia Grande. Admire the lighthouse overlooking the headlands of Cabo Sardăo, and pedal an off-road path high above the coastline for breathtaking views of sea stacks and the crashing Atlantic. The longer option leads to a spectacular beach set at the mouth of the Rio Seixe. In Odeceixe, Hotel Casas do Moinho incorporates traditional village houses clustered around a vintage working windmill. (38 or 43 mi.)
Day 4: Welcome to the Algarve! Spin through vineyards and farmland to Aljezur, the last town to be reclaimed from the Moors. Picnic with ocean views at the Carrapateira headlands, then continue down the coast to Sagres, where Prince Henry founded his 15th-century navigational school. Relax with a two-night stay at our cliff-top hotel, where every room has an ocean view. (43 mi.)
Day 5: Free day in Sagres. A short ride leads to the towering cliffs of Cabo de Săo Vicente, the southwestern-most point in Europe and once the end of the known world. Afternoon free for beaches, a hike along the headlands, a dolphin cruise, or a surfing lesson! (0 or 8 mi.)
Day 6: Bike the Algarve coast past tiny fishing villages, then head inland through orchards of carob, almond, and oranges. End in Lagos at the four-star Hotel Marina Club. An afternoon walking tour reveals the city's colorful history, as the center of trade with Africa during Moorish times, and capital of the Algarve when it was an independent kingdom. Shop or explore the beautiful beaches of Meia Praia and Dona Ana before our festive final dinner. (28 or 32 mi.)
Day 7: Morning boat cruise through the fanciful rock formations and sea grottoes of Ponta da Piedade, followed by a farewell lunch. Depart Lagos on the afternoon train to Lisbon, or opt for an extra night to enjoy the Algarve coast.
