Easy Rider Classics - Portugal Walking Tour

The Hidden Algarve

Launch Photo Gallery
We’ll leave the tourist crowds behind as we explore the hidden landscapes, secluded beaches, and fascinating history that are the Algarve’s best-kept secrets. Coastal walks lead beneath sandstone cliffs sculpted into sea stacks, blowholes, and natural bridges. Inland hikes cross foothills planted with almond, carob, and fig trees, with stops to visit tiny whitewashed villages crowned with filigreed chimney tops. Between trails, we’ll indulge in southern Portuguese pleasures: fresh-caught seafood, local wines, and, of course, those beautiful beaches!

Day 1: Mid-day transfer from Faro Airport to Tavira for a two-night stay. After lunch, we’ll tour the Old Quarter’s Moorish ramparts. An optional warm-up walk visits the Ilha da Tavira, part of the Ria Formosa Nature Park, before our welcome dinner. Our luxurious pousada was originally an Augustinian convent founded in 1569.

Day 2: Sight flamingos, egrets, and avocets on a morning walk through the Sapal Nature Reserve, and learn how sea salt has been harvested since Roman times in the Rio Guadiana delta. In the afternoon, our janela do Guadiana (window on the Guadiana) route reveals broad vistas of the river valley and the distant Atlantic, and surrounding hillsides of carob, fig, and almond orchards.

Day 3: Free morning in Loulé, famous for its traditional market and copper and leather craftsmen. Our afternoon walk meanders along a beautiful stream valley lined by rock roses, wild rosemary, willow trees, and traditional Moorish-style waterwheels. En route we’ll meet a traditional basket maker. Dinner and a two-night stay at a charming country house in Boliqueime.

Day 4: Groves of holm oak and juniper shade our route into the hill country of the Barrocal. Our hike ascends the limestone plateau of Rocha da Pena for views stretching to the coast. A relaxing afternoon walk loops from the Moorish ruins of Paderne Castle to a Roman bridge on the Rio Quarteira.

Day 5: A dramatic coastal route explores deserted beaches, surf-pounded cliffs, blowholes and sea stacks near Senhora da Rocha. After lunch in Silves, we’ll visit its restored Moorish fortress and a contemporary tilemaker. A riverside trail leads to our contemporary guesthouse overlooking a birding refuge on the Rio Arade.

Day 6: Free day in Lagos for shopping and a walking tour of the Old Quarter.  Take an afternoon siesta on the beach, walk the coast to Alvor, or relax on a boat cruise through the sea grottoes. Two-night stay at the Pousada do Infante in Sagres, with five-star views of the ocean and towering cliffs of Săo Vicente.

Day 7: Our finale follows the lands’ edge through the Natural Park of Southwest Alentejo to the majestic Cabo de Săo Vicente, the southwesternmost point in Europe. Farewell dinner celebration.

Day 8: Transfer to Faro Airport for mid-morning flights.
