Walking
tours: Europe
Our walking tours
of Europe will take you on a combination of hiking trails, forest
paths, along with the occasional paved country road through the tiny
villages, ancient forests, and great cities of Europe. Our goal is
to give you an authentic experience of country in which you are touring.
What
to expect on a walking tour of Europe
Our
walking tours of Europe average 6 to 10 miles of combined walking
and hiking per day, over a mix of quiet back roads and easy to moderate
hiking trails. All our walking tours of Europe are accompanied by
a support van, which means you, are never pressured to walk further
then want to. Two bilingual tour leaders also accompany you on all
of our walking tours of Europe to show the way along carefully researched
routes.
While
the terrain is sometimes hilly, none of the routes are extreme, with
daily options ranging from five to twelve miles, which ensures there
is always enough to challenge even the most experienced hikers. Each
day is full of surprises: the chance to bargain at an 800-year-old
Monday market in Portugal, an ocean swim in the mouth of a submerged
Azorean volcano, or the 24 switchbacks of an ancient mule path leading
to the Rio Trevélez in Spain!
In the evening, we'll kick off our shoes and relax over a feast of
local specialties: Andalusian paella, a platter of tapas, or an Azorean
cozido stew cooked in the heat of a volcanic steam vent. Our accommodations,
whether in a mountain lodge perched high in the Alpujarras or an oceanfront
resort overlooking the crashing Atlantic, are sure to inspire dreams
of the adventures that await on the trail. |

Walking
tours: Spain
In the Spanish
province of Andalucía, our "Way of the Moors" tour traces their footsteps
from the Mediterranean coast through the scenic Alpujarras to Granada,
once the jewel in the crown of the Moorish kingdom.
The south of Spain is a walker's paradise, and our route celebrates
its amazing diversity. We'll warm up with a day of hiking along the
cliffs and dunes of the sunny Mediterranean coast. We'll then head
inland to the foothills of the Sierra Nevada, Spain's highest mountain
range, to begin our Alpujarran adventure. Our walking tours traverse
valleys that are among the most fertile in Spain, thanks to the irrigation
systems introduced by the Moors. Even today the region is a Garden
of Eden, with groves of cherries, pears, almonds, figs, quince, and
pomegranates. Smells of wild rosemary, thyme, and lavender permeate
the fresh mountain air, and stunning views of the snow-capped Sierra
Nevada lie around every bend in the trail. Terraced white villages
seem to spill down the mountainsides.
Walking
tours: Portugal
"Walking
the Border Country" follows the historic "Camino Portugues" pilgrimage
route through Portugal's wine country to Santiago de Compostela in
northern Spain. Our newest tour, "Walking the Hidden Algarve," explores
the best-kept secrets of Portugal's southernmost coast. For the ultimate
off-the-beaten-path walking vacation, exotic São Miguel Island, located
in the Atlantic 700 miles west of the Continent, is an Easy Rider
exclusive. |
