Founded in 1986, Easy Rider Tours is a family-owned company specializing exclusively in active vacations in Ireland, Portugal, Spain, the Canadian Maritimes, and our own New England. Over the past two decades, we’ve developed the most extensive cycling programs in Ireland and the Iberian Peninsula of any American outfitter. Each of our twenty-one itineraries is carefully crafted to include not only spectacular, off-the-beaten- path cycling but a special emphasis on local culture and history that has become an Easy Rider trademark. We’re firm believers in the benefits (not to mention fun!) of traveling with the locals, and each of our guiding teams always includes at least one native cyclist. If you’d like to speak with past guests about how their Easy Rider experience compared to other companies they’ve traveled with, please give us a call. We’ll be glad to put you in touch.
No. While a few of our tours are ideal for newer cyclists, an equal number are most appropriate for avid bikers who are looking for a real challenge. The great majority of our tours are designed for cyclists whose abilities and interests lie somewhere in between. We’ve rated each of the tours to help you decide which trip is best for you.
We stay in 3- to 5-star hotels, paradors, pousadas, manor houses, and country inns, each hand-picked for its charming ambiance or setting. On occasion, we may stay in a simpler B&B or inn in order not to miss out on an especially beautiful region. All rooms have private baths. Whenever possible, we stay in or close to a village or town so that you can explore on foot, shop, or soak up the local color in a pub or café.
Leave your worries behind! We encourage you to ride at your own pace, and you’ll have your own set of maps and written route directions. Your guides will know that this is your first tour, and will give you as much support as you like. We do recommend that you read our tour descriptions and ratings carefully and choose a trip that fits your abilities. Your tour confirmation packet will include training tips and a training schedule customized for the tour you’ve chosen. With the camaraderie of fellow cyclists and the support of our guides and van, you might be surprised at what you can do!
Several of our trips, such as the Azores, Camino de Santiago, and Donegal Highlands tours, are designed especially for advanced riders. In addition, our Celtic Challenge tour in Ireland and Serras & Sea trip in Portugal feature 50- to 70-mile rides every day—guaranteed to give you the adrenaline rush you’re looking for! Even our less strenuous trips offer a variety of route options. You can frequently add over 50% to your mileage by riding all the long options
On most days, you’ll have a choice between two, and sometimes three, mileage options. All the routes overlap for the first part of the day. When the route options diverge, usually after lunch, the guide who is cycling will sweep one route and the guide driving the van will sweep the other. A choice of route options means that you can make each day as relaxing or as challenging as you want it to be.
Our tours attract adventurous travelers from all over the United States and Canada, with a few guests from Europe, South America, Australia, and Asia. Our maximum group size is 16 guests, with an average of 12 people. A typical group is about half couples and half single travelers, with slightly more women than men. Just over half of our guests are between 35 and 55 years old. Well over two-thirds have taken other adventure travel trips, and about 30% are repeat Easy Riders.
While our tours are designed primarily for adults, we welcome children as young as twelve years old if they are accompanied by a parent. All children must be competent cyclists, and should be comfortable socially with a group of adults. More frequently, we’ve seen parents touring with their 40-something “children!”
We welcome single travelers, and charge a single supplement only if you reserve your tour less than 45 days before the departure date. If we are able to match you with a roommate, we will refund the supplement charge. If you wish to be guaranteed a private room, the single supplement always applies.
Certainly! Let us know which tour(s) you’re considering, and we’ll be happy to provide names and e-mail addresses or telephone numbers of past participants.
