Algarve Blue

Launch Photo Gallery
Between its azure skies and Atlantic shores, the Algarve boasts more shades of blue than even Martha Stewart could imagine! Our southern Portugal biking route traces the Atlantic coast to the land's end at Cabo de Săo Vicente, continues to lively Lagos, and tops it off in the mountain forests of the Serra da Monchique (new for 2019!). Several two-night stays allow options for biking, hiking, a dolphin watch, or just relaxing. Along the way we'll pedal past ever-changing ocean views: tiny fishing villages, colorful harbors, towering sea cliffs, and golden sand dunes - not to mention some of the most beautiful beaches in Europe.

Day 1: Morning transfer from Lisbon Airport to Santiago do Cacém, whose Moorish past can be sensed in its steep winding streets and commanding castle views. A warm-up ride leads to the Roman ruins of Miróbriga. Welcome dinner and stay at the Santiago Cooking & Nature Hotel. (5 or 20 mi.)

Day 2: Bike a ridgetop road through groves of olive and cork trees, then descend to the coast for the crescent beach coves of Porto Covo. End in Vila Nova de Milfontes, a pretty village overlooking the Rio Mira estuary. (35 mi.)

Day 3: Rice fields and traditional villages highlight our ride to the magnificent Praia Grande. Admire storks nests at Cabo Sardăo, then pedal an off-road path high above the coastline for breathtaking views of sea stacks and the crashing Atlantic. Two-night stay in Odeceixe at the Casas do Moinho, a cluster of village houses restored as a boutique hotel. (38 or 43 mi.)

Day 4: Welcome to the Algarve! Free day to bike an inland loop through pristine orchard country and off-the-beaten-path villages. Alternatively take a coastal hike along the Fisherman’s Trail or a short spin to a spectacular beach at the mouth of the Rio Seixe. (0, 5, 40, 52, or 70 mi.)

Day 5: Spin through vineyards and farmland to Aljezur, the last town to be reclaimed from the Moors. Picnic with ocean views at the Carrapateira headlands, then cycle down the coast to Sagres, where Prince Henry founded his 15th-century navigational school. Relax with a two-night stay at the cliff-top Memmo Baleeira hotel, where every room has an ocean view. (43 mi.)

Day 6: Free day in Sagres. An easy ride leads to the towering cliffs of Cabo de Săo Vicente, the southwestern-most point in Europe and once the end of the known world. Afternoon free for beaches, a dolphin cruise, or a surfing lesson! (0 or 8 mi.)

Day 7: Follow the Algarve coast past tiny fishing villages, then bike inland through orchards of carob, almond, and oranges to Lagos. Enjoy a boat cruise through the fanciful rock formations and sea grottoes of Ponta da Piedade before a short transfer to the Algarve’s rooftop: the Serra da Monchique! Two-night stay at the Villa Termal Resort, a mineral water spa in Caldas de Monchique. (28 or 32 mi.)

Day 8: Free day for hiking, biking, or R&R at the spa. Our cycling route follows forested roads around the base of Foia, the tallest peak in the Algarve, with an optional climb to its summit (2931’) - a stage finish in the Tour de Portugal! Fertile terraces cascade down the slopes, planted with madronho (strawberry) trees, citrus, and figs. On a clear day the view stretches to the Atlantic far below. (0, 26 or 35 mi.)

Day 9: Morning transfer to Lisbon Airport and downtown, arriving by noon. Alternatively a taxi may be arranged from our hotel to nearby Faro Airport.
