Easy Rider Classics - Spain Walking Tour

The Way of the Moors

Launch Photo Gallery
The south of Spain is a walker’s paradise, and our route celebrates its amazing diversity. After warming up along the sunny Mediterranean coast, we’ll head inland to the Alpujarra, the southern face of the Sierra Nevada. Terraced pueblos blancos seem to spill down the mountainsides, and stunning views of the snow-capped Sierra lie around every bend in the trail. Our final walk into Granada, once the crown of the Moorish kingdom, descends a trail through the foothills to exotic neighborhoods of gypsy caves and lovely villas.

  • Warm-up walk along the Mediterranean coast
  • Hikes in the forested valleys of the Alpujarra
  • Moorish history, architecture, and cuisine
  • Picturesque pueblos blancos (white villages)
  • Spectacular views of the snow-capped Sierra Nevada, highest mountains in Iberia
  • Sample local goat’s milk cheese and jamón serrano
  • The ultimate insider’s tour of Granada
  • Explore the Alhambra and the Generalife gardens
  • Flamenco performance in a gypsy cueva

Day 1: Mid-day transfer from Almería Airport to the sparkling seaside village of San José for a two-night stay in a converted 18th-century cortijo. Take a warm-up stroll to the beach at Playa de los Genoveses or relax poolside before our welcome dinner.

Day 2: Our seaside hike follows the cliffs and sand dunes of Cabo de Gata Natural Park, past native palmitos, Moorish tower ruins, and African flamingos feeding at the salt flats. Paella dinner overlooking the San José harbor.

Day 3: On to the Alpujarra! Morning van transfer to Laujar de Andarax, famous for its fifteen Renaissance fountains. Our trail leads through the tranquil pine forest of the Andarax River valley. Look for eagles and mountain goats below the snow-capped peaks! Overnight at a mountain inn overlooking the pretty village and orchards of Laroles.

Day 4: After visiting the breadmaker in Laroles, we’ll hike out of the valley through some of the tiniest villages in the Alpujarra: Júbar, Mairena, Nechite, and Válor, famous for its goat cheese and mountain air-cured jamón serrano. Overnight in Cadiar at the beautifully-restored Alqueiría de Morayma, named for the wife of the last Moorish king.

Day 5: Originally a Roman road, our trail descends in spectacular fashion via 24 short switchbacks into the Rio Trevélez gorge and across the river. Refresh yourself along the way at a naturally-carbonated mineral water spring (the local Perrier!). Our path out of the valley follows poplar-lined streams to Busquistar. Along the trail, we’ll visit a local potter whose ceramic street signs grace many Alpujarran villages.

Day 6: The highest Sierra peaks rise 6,000 feet above us on our hike through the Poqueira valley to Bubión and Pampaneira, where we’ll meet an artisana in her rug-weaving workshop. Afternoon transfer to Granada for dinner at our favorite Moroccan restaurant and a two-night stay in an elegant 16th-century palacio with views of the Alhambra.

Day 7: Our walking tour of Granada begins in the foothills overlooking the City of the Moors and includes a guided tour of the Alhambra and Generalife gardens. Farewell dinner and flamenco performance in the Sacromonte.

Day 8: Morning transfer to Granada Airport.
